New land price information becomes publicly available

Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism announced on September 16, 2026, that detailed data from the latest Prefectural Land Price Survey had been added to its Real Estate Information Library and National Land Numerical Information Download Service. The figures represent land values as of July 1. The map-based library allows users to examine individual benchmark locations alongside other price data, urban planning information, disaster-related datasets and population information. Data access is also available through an API.

Disaster information included in the update

The ministry also updated designated emergency evacuation site information using data current as of September 4, 2026. Land price datasets can be downloaded in formats including shapefiles, GML, GeoJSON and CSV. These resources support geographic comparisons and broader market research before a buyer proceeds to investigate individual properties.

A useful starting point for overseas buyers

Foreign purchasers often begin researching Japanese real estate through online listings, but asking prices alone do not establish a neighborhood's underlying land values. Public benchmark data can help buyers compare locations and understand relevant planning information. However, official benchmark prices are not actual sale prices for individual properties and do not verify building condition or legal title. Buyers researching remotely should distinguish public geographic information from the property-specific investigation required before acquisition.
