Annual nationwide survey begins September 1
MLIT announced on August 25 that its fiscal 2026 Housing Market Trend Survey would begin September 1. Conducted annually since fiscal 2001, the government statistical survey examines the factors affecting household housing decisions and how purchases are financed. Samples for custom-built homes are drawn from construction-start data, while existing-home purchasers are selected from registration information. The survey covers custom homes, existing homes, newly developed housing, private rental housing and renovation. Results for the fiscal 2026 survey are scheduled for publication by July 2027.
The data help describe the typical domestic buyer
The previous fiscal 2025 survey reported average funds of ¥76.46 million for custom-built homes and ¥64.43 million for newly developed condominium housing. Such averages cannot be used as appraisals for individual properties, but they help describe household purchasing power, financing behavior and buyer preferences. Real-estate businesses can use the information as context for product and sales strategy, while investors can assess the depth of the owner-occupier demand that may eventually form the resale market. For foreign investors, understanding the financial capacity of domestic buyers can be particularly relevant to future exit liquidity.
